Bio

Briggs Whiteford is the founder and creative force behind Gallery 121. She has been engaged in making art for over 30 years as a painter and is inspired to show art in all its diverse forms. Believing in the cultural power of art, Gallery 121 is committed to exhibiting art of all mediums which raises awareness, educates aesthetically, and touches on the contemporary issues of our community and time.

Raised in South Carolina, Briggs came to art through theatre where she began painting stage sets. Once discovering her true love for painting she studied at the Art Students League in NYC, SilverMine Art Center and the New York Studio School. Her greatest teacher continues to be nature, where she works directly from perception (landscapes, seascapes, skies). “The urgency of capturing what is before me has its own special light, color and spatial organization that cannot be taught but observed and experienced.”

Briggs’ has had solo shows throughout the US and Europe, and is in private and public collections internationally.  She was named Artist of the Year at the Huntsville Art Museum, and has shown her work there for the last 10 years.

“I find art in life and then bring that life to my art. Art lifts us out of the cul de sac of overly personalized thought and gives us inner expansion and space whether viewing it or making it. Art saves lives and moves the needle on culture.”
